Specialties
-
Anxiety
Whether you struggle with constant worries, “what ifs,” and feelings of doom, or physical symptoms such as nausea and racing heart, living with anxiety is challenging and exhausting. Although no one can entirely eliminate anxiety, it doesn’t have to control your life. I can teach you science-backed techniques for responding to anxious thoughts and feelings, putting you back in control of your life.
-
Perfectionism
Do you often feel like your achievements aren’t good enough? Do you experience an intense fear of failure and have trouble taking risks or trying new things? Do you notice persistent self-critical thoughts? These can be signs of perfectionism. Working hard toward your goals is important, but striving for perfection can create problems. We can work to understand why perfectionism developed, practice tolerating uncertainty, and learn how self-compassion can help you make more progress toward your goals and values.
-
Insomnia
If you have persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or both, you may suffer from insomnia. I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), a form of therapy that focuses on changing thoughts and behaviors that interfere with sleep. CBT-I has been shown through extensive research to improve sleep. In fact, the American College of Physicians recommends that adults receive CBT-I as a first-line treatment for insomnia, before trying sleep medications. Treatment is often brief (6-8 sessions) and emphasizes making behavior changes to improve sleep.
-
Health Anxiety
Do you spend hours online trying to figure out whether a symptom you’re having means you are seriously ill? Do you constantly scan your body for any concerning sensations? Do you feel anxiety about your health no matter how many doctors you see? You may be suffering from health anxiety. Therapy can help you manage worry and uncertainty without falling down a google rabbit hole, and help you refocus your energy on the things you care about most.
-
Panic Attacks
Almost a quarter of Americans have experienced a panic attack (Kessler et al., 2006). Some people experience repeated panic attacks, which can happen in response to a specific trigger or out of the blue. Some people develop an extreme fear of having another panic attack that interferes with their life. Therapy (including CBT and ACT) has been shown to be effective for treating recurrent panic attacks. I can help you understand your body’s panic response and learn skills to tolerate and manage anxiety.
-
Coping with Chronic Medical Conditions
As a trained Health Psychologist, I understand and respect the connection between mind and body. Living with a chronic medical condition takes a toll on your mental health. Using research-backed strategies I can help you direct your energy toward changing what you can and accepting what is outside your control. A chronic medical condition doesn’t have to stop you from living a fulfilling life.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a normal emotion that includes feelings of tension, uneasiness, or dread. We typically feel anxiety in response to a perceived threat that we believe could happen in the future.
Anxiety includes:
THOUGHTS - anxiety often comes with worry, which is when your mind offers up ideas or images of bad things that might happen. This can take many forms: assuming the worst-case-scenario, racing thoughts, replaying the same worries over and over again, difficulty concentrating.
PHYSICAL CHANGES - anxiety includes physical changes such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, racing heart, nausea, muscle tension, headaches, restlessness, or trouble sleeping
BEHAVIORS - anxiety is uncomfortable and most people’s response is to try to make the feeling go away. This leads to avoidance - moving away from situations/places/people that could lead to anxiety. This could involve avoiding specific situations (e.g., planes, elevators), avoiding social settings and isolating from others, or procrastinating on tasks. Avoidance tends to reduce anxiety in the short-term and lead to problems (and higher anxiety) over time.
How do I know if anxiety is a problem for me?
Although everyone experiences anxiety at times, especially in response to stressful life circumstances, some people can experience anxiety that is so intense or so persistent that it feels unmanageable. In short, anxiety is a problem when interferes with your life and keeps you from doing what’s important to you. Anxiety can negatively affect your work, your family relationships, your social life, and your health. It can leave you feeling burned out, overwhelmed, guilty, or disconnected from the people and things that matter to you. It can feel as though all your decisions revolve around trying to get rid of anxiety, and that anxiety is in control of your life.
If you feel like anxiety is controlling your life, and what you’ve tried hasn’t worked, you’re not alone. Therapy can help you take back control.
Although anxiety can’t be completely eliminated, you CAN learn more helpful ways of responding to anxiety that allow you more freedom to do what matters to you. I can help you tackle avoidance (stop making anxiety worse!) and learn new, science-backed techniques for managing anxiety (e.g., mindfulness, self-compassion, acceptance-based strategies). When anxiety is no longer in charge, you can focus on doing what gives your life meaning.
I have expertise in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which have been proven to be effective for treating anxiety and many other mental health concerns. To learn more about these types of therapy and my approach, click here.
